This program prepares the student for entry-level positions in the medical field related to reimbursement procedures. This area is expected to grow much faster than average in the Administrative Medical field. The student will learn medical office protocol and receive specialized training in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and Health Care Financing Administration Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS). The student will be able to practice professional interpersonal relations with diverse patient/client customers using knowledge of medical/legal and ethical issues. The student will also be able to employ advanced coding techniques with emphasis on case studies, health records, and federal regulations regarding prospective payment systems and methods of reimbursement.
The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) has established a national certification program for medical coders. Upon completion of the Coding and Billing courses, coupled with extensive on-the-job experience, students are encouraged to take the AAPC examination to become a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
